Wheel Offset & Backspacing Explained: Get the Perfect Stance
When upgrading to custom wheels, choosing the right look is only half the battle. You also need to make sure the wheels fit correctly within your vehicle’s wheel wells. Two terms you will hear constantly are offset and backspacing.
These measurements determine how far your wheels push out from your truck’s body (an aggressive "poked" stance) or tuck inside the fenders. Here offset and backspacing are explained in plain English:
1. Wheel Offset (Measured in Millimeters)
Offset is the distance from the mounting surface of the wheel (where it bolts to your brake rotor) to the exact center line of the wheel. Offset is categorized in three ways:
- Zero Offset: The mounting surface is exactly in line with the center of the wheel. The wheel sits in a standard, neutral position.
- Positive Offset (+): The mounting surface is closer to the street-facing side of the wheel. This pulls the wheel inward toward the suspension. Common on passenger cars, stock crossovers, and newer SUVs.
- Negative Offset (-): The mounting surface is closer to the brake-facing side of the wheel. This pushes the wheel outward away from the vehicle body, creating a deep-dish look and a wider stance. Negative offset is popular on lifted pickups (e.g. running a -12mm, -24mm, or -44mm offset).
2. Backspacing (Measured in Inches)
Backspacing is the distance from the mounting surface of the wheel to the back edge of the wheel. While offset measures position relative to the wheel center, backspacing measures absolute depth.
- Why it matters: Backspacing is critical for checking that the back of the wheel won't hit your suspension parts, brake calipers, or sway bars.

Getting the wrong offset can lead to:
- Fender Rubbing: The tire hits the outer fender lip when turning or hitting bumps.
- Suspension Rubbing: The inner sidewall of the tire rubs against the control arms or struts.
- Poor Handling: Incorrect offset changes the steering axis geometry, creating heavy steering or premature wheel bearing wear.
