How Wheel Alignment Saves Your Tires (and Your Wallet)
Hit enough frost heaves between Moncton and Fredericton and something eventually knocks out of spec. You might notice the wheel sitting a bit off-centre. Or one tire wearing on the inside edge while the others look fine.
That is usually alignment — not “bad tires.”
What we mean by alignment
We are adjusting suspension angles so the tires roll the way the manufacturer intended. The tires themselves are not “bent.” The geometry holding them is.
The three angles people hear about:
- Toe — wheels pointed slightly in or out from above
- Camber — tilt in or out from the front
- Caster — steering-axis tilt that affects straight-line feel
You do not need to memorize the numbers. You do need to notice the symptoms.
How bad alignment costs money
Misaligned tires scrub instead of rolling. That feathers the tread and can kill a new set early — especially after a hard pothole hit.
You can also feel it in fuel use. More drag means the engine works harder. Steering parts take uneven loads too.
If you are already shopping rubber, fix alignment when you mount the new set. Otherwise you are buying the same wear pattern again. Shop tires and book alignment together if you want it done in one visit.
When to get it checked
- Once a year is a reasonable baseline for local roads
- After a solid pothole, curb, or ditch scrape
- If the vehicle pulls
- If the steering wheel is crooked on a straight road
- If tread wear looks uneven
Putting on winters or summers is a good reminder to ask for a check. Same with a lift or new wheels — offset changes can expose alignment issues you did not notice before. More on that in wheel offset explained.
Common questions
Is an alignment the same as a balance?
No. Balance fixes vibration from weight differences. Alignment fixes direction and angles. Different jobs.
How long does it take?
Often under an hour if nothing is seized or damaged. Older trucks with rusty hardware can take longer.
Will alignment fix pulling on its own?
Sometimes. Pulling can also be tire pressure, brake drag, or a bad tire. We diagnose before we sell a service.
